Earth Day 2010 bloomed sunny and warm here in Minnesota. For me, this was going to be a very special day. No, I wasn’t going to celebrate Lenin’s Birthday, the way the new Marxists and Socialists were going to, by kissing the ass of their Mother the Earth, or worshiping Gaia, or hugging a tree.

I had a plan.

As a precinct secretary, I received a communique from the local Senate District. That missive was a forwarded e-mail from the College Republicans at the University of Minnesota. In it, they told of how they had secured the services of Karl Rove to come to campus and give a speech and sign some copies of his new book, “Courage and Consequence”. Seeing the ultimate irony of having Rove here on Earth Day, at the U of M, it was way too good to pass up.

So this morning, I arose, made coffee, and sat down at the computer to begin my day by catching up on my reading at Andrew Breitbart’s Big sites.

Big Government, Big Hollywood and Big Journalism are on my daily reading list, are pure Conservative gold, and should be perused by anyone looking to escape the Governmental Propaganda Machine that is the MSM. There a few posts regarding Earth Day, and I commented on a couple of them, and got to whack a troll along the way. That, along with some coffee really gets the day off to a good start. Soon it was time to head down to campus, and after not finding the exact route that I had planned on being open, I found a place to park and started on my way to Smith Hall.

As I walked onto the Mall by Northrup, I found myself walking with a couple of Campus Police who were on their way to Smith Hall because of the noisy bunch who were marching there chanting something about Rove being a terrorist. The nice thing about that was I didn’t have to guess where Smith Hall was, I just followed the noise.

I walked through the crowd, and into Smith Hall. Found the room and sat down to hear what Karl had to say. He discussed, in no particular order, the healthcare bill, and it’s affect on the country, the Stimulus Bill, and it’s lack of effect, and the ballooning deficit and how damaging it will be to the country. All pretty standard stuff, and well received by most of the crowd. About 25 minutes into the speech the hippie plants broke into their “Rove is a terrorist” chant, and were roundly shouted down by the attendees as they were led out of the room by the Campus Police. There were a couple more dweebs escorted out by the end of the speech spewing some nonsense, Karl seemed unphased by the idiots, and looked like it was old hat to him.

Karl set aside about a half hour for questions, and fielded a wide range of topics from Afghanistan, to who the most influential people on Earth were currently, peer pressure on campus, and why he would come into the belly of the beast, so to speak. His reasoning for appearing on campus was to as he put it, to let the new generation of conservatives that they were not alone either on campus, or in the world.

We were chased out of the room before the book signing to facilitate some order, and to weed out the remaining wingnuts. So I grabbed a couple copies of his book for him to sign, and went and stood in line. Standing behind me was a guy of my general age, and behind us, some 60′s rejects and their “young skulls full of mush” followers. I remarked to my line mate “Oh to be young and disgruntled again” We then embarked on a discussion of how we came to be Conservatives, Tea Parties, Tax Rallies, and how bad it was going to be for the young hippies when they actually had to work for a living, rather than sponging off their parents.

By then we were back in the room getting our books signed, and I had the chance to get a picture with Karl, shake his hand, and tell him he was doing the good work for all of us.

As I walked back to my car, I got a chance to see the education system at work preparing our youngsters for the real world. Kids sitting around listening to their Ipods, juggling bowling pins and hacky sacks. Pretty much the same as it has always been from my dim recollection of hanging out on campus in the 70′s.

Anyway, part of my Earth Day plan was to have a nice lunch, one that included something deep fried to use some fossil fuel, and include some airborne yummy smells, err pollutants. What to do? I considered the Hickory Hut, home of awesome deep fried chicken wings. But I had those last week after the Tax Day Tea Party in St Paul. I considered two different fish and chip joints, JJ’s on University by the Ax-Man surplus store, and Mac’s Fish and Chips on Hamline and Larpenteur. Not in the mood for fish, I cruised down University, and turned into Porky’s Drive Inn. A mainstay of cruisers since before cars had mandated seatbelts, and some of the best, if not the best onion rings in town. I got a Double Spicy burger and an order of onion rings, and went out to sit in the sun on a picnic bench and have some yummy, yummy grub. Turned out I made a good decision, the burger was tasty, and the onion rings were just as I remembered them crisp, salty, and just a little greasy. Truly a meal fit for Earth Day.

I listened to the Twins game as I cruised back across town, and our lads dropped the last game of the series against the Indians, 8-1. Oh well you can’t have it all. Then there was serious Earth Day business to attend to. I stopped at the local Menards and picked up a couple of cases of incandescent bulbs. Yes, I believe in the Edison Bulb, and I will be damned if anyone will tell me what kind of light bulbs I can or cannot use. After all the sheep have been converted to cfls, and spend their days whining about the crummy light and that they don’t work well in the cold. I will have one thing to say to them: “If you want a good light, one that is warm and you can read by it, you are gonna have to talk to me.” Then I will charge their stupid asses $50 a bulb, for being pussies. Capitalism at it’s finest.

Then, well satisfied I had increased my stash, I drove home. Spent some time out in the yard watering my new hedge. When it matures, it will be 6 feet tall, and thick as the day is long, obscuring the view of the front of the house from prying eyes. It will be glorious.

What did you do today?
